Dissemination of False Informations Sparks Warning from Department of Community Development
Bandar Seri Begawan: The public is advised to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and refrain from easily believing information circulated on social media without verifying its authenticity. This advice was issued following a TikTok account under the username “@sultanhajihassanabolkiah,” which used the official logo of the Department of Community Development as its profile picture, uploading false information regarding the registration for Monthly Welfare Assistance, BKB amounting to 500 dollars, and the registration for His Majesty’s personal gift in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The Department of Community Development informed the public that the information is false, and the department has no affiliation with the mentioned account and has never issued any statement as disseminated.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the public is reminded not to share personal details with any party whose legitimacy has not been confirmed. The Department takes the matter seriously, particularly the misuse of its official logo, and this matter has been reported to the authorities.
The department reminds the public that the act of disseminating false or fabricated information with the intention of misleading others is an offence under the Public Order Act, Chapter 148, Section 34. Any individual who, whether orally, in writing, or through any other means, spreads false reports or makes false statements that disrupt public order may be subjected to imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of $3,000, or both.
