Librarians are required to learn new skills most frequently especially those involving computer technologies. This was stated by Pengiran Doctor Haji Md Esa Al-Islam bin Pengiran Haji Md Yunus, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei, UTB at the closing ceremony of the Conference on Libraries Transform: Unlocking Your Potential as Librarians. The ceremony was held at the Universiti Teknologi Brunei.
Pengiran Doctor Haji Md Esa Al-Islam also outlined that libraries have been transformed not only due to the digital revolution that had taken place. Another reason is that the nature of information required from the academics has increasingly become more complex. The era of digital technology has revolutionised the way information is provided and accessed. It had supported and improved the way information is disseminated to the community of users. To support this, he added, there is a need to provide library leadership in this dynamic and increasingly digital library environment. The aim is to help libraries make use of new and emerging technologies by promoting and supporting technological experimentation and innovation.
The 3-day conference was attended by over 100 librarians from school, universities, public libraries and government departments and a group of our Library and information Science students from IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus and Politeknik Brunei. The conference was to discuss and highlight the challenging issues and responsibilities of the new librarian in the fast changing environment. Dayang Nellie binti Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, President of the Brunei Darussalam Library Association, in an interview with RTB, expressed the hope that such a conference would improve librarians’ services.
