Chicken Oversupply to Counterbalance Pork Shortage in the Philippines
MANILA: Amidst concerns of a pork shortage in parts of the Philippines, local poultry producers indicate an oversupply of chicken meat could help balance the market. Elias Jose Inciong, president of the United Broiler Raisers Association (UBRA), noted that high domestic production combined with aggressive importation has led to an excess supply of chicken. This oversupply, especially notable during the holiday season, has resulted in declining farmgate prices, even as retail prices for dressed chicken have only modestly decreased.
According to Philippines News Agency, mentioned that the current situation could encourage consumers to choose chicken over pork. Meanwhile, Danilo Fausto, president of the Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food, Inc. (PCAFI), commented on the reported pork shortage in Oriental Mindoro, suggesting it may be overstated. The ASF infection in the province has reduced pork supply, but Fausto pointed out that pork could be easily imported from nearby Batangas province to meet demand.
Fausto also emphasized the need for stricter biosecurity measures in Oriental Mindoro to control ASF transmission, underscoring the province’s crucial role in the region’s food supply. The PCAFI, together with the Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines (PPFP), is working with local officials to enhance biosecurity, particularly in ports and other critical areas.
