Cebu City Police to Enforce Security Measures for Sinulog Festival

CEBU CITY: In preparation for the upcoming Sinulog celebration on January 21, Task Force Sinulog will designate the area from Fuente Osmeña Rotunda to Gen. Maxilom Ave. as a special concern zone to ensure peace and order, as announced by a police official on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, city police chief, this strategic move is aimed at preventing disruptions during the Fiesta Señor celebration, with particular focus on the uptown region, a popular spot for revelers and visitors. Given the high foot traffic in this area during Sinulog, the task force’s decision reflects an effort to manage large crowds and maintain public safety.

In an additional security measure, Lt. Col. Janette Rafter, city police deputy chief for operation, has advised those attending religious activities at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño to refrain from bringing prohibited items like knives and lighters. Rafter emphasized the police’s commitment to both the safety of the public and the preservation of the religious expression associated with the Señor Santo Niño celebration.

Rafter also mentioned that the local police would be proactive in safeguarding devotees and tourists by monitoring street dwellers who might pose a threat during the festivities.

Furthermore, City Councilor James Cuenco revealed plans to propose a temporary suspension of roadside pay-parking to alleviate traffic congestion around the Basilica. This initiative aims to manage the flow of vehicles on major roads leading to the century-old church, considering the increased traffic expected during the Sinulog festival. Currently, some city roads are utilized for parking, managed by a private company under contract with the city government for public road pay-parking operations.
