Post: Cebu City Begins Demolition of Skywalk for Bus Rapid Transit Project Construction

CEBU CITY – In a significant move to make way for the construction of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, a skywalk along Osmeña Boulevard was demolished on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, one of the two skywalks has been dismantled to facilitate the project, marking a pivotal step in the city’s infrastructure development. The main structure, consisting of two separate concrete footbridges and other components, will be reconstructed at the South Road Properties (SRP), ensuring the continuity of pedestrian access in a new location.

The demolition, supervised by Guardo and engineers from Hunan Road and Bridges Construction, led to the temporary closure of the road for ongoing works. Traffic adjustments were made to accommodate the construction, with vehicles along Fuente Osmeña up to Arlington Pond Street being rerouted. Those traveling from B. Rodriguez to Colon Street were directed through Ramos St. to minimize disruption.

Engineer Jomar Doque, overseeing the BRT Phase 1 project, indicated that the demolition process of the two skywalks would span 18 days, with a commitment to clear the first skywalk by February 18. The operation also includes plans for dismantling a second skywalk near the Cebu Normal University, with its main structure to be utilized at the SRP area. This strategic relocation and reconstruction effort underscore the city’s commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure while preserving pedestrian access.
