BFP-Bicol Raises Alarm Over 26% Rise in Fire Incidents
Legazpi City, Bicol Region – The Bureau of Fire Protection in the Bicol Region has issued a warning about a significant increase in fire incidents, urging the public to exercise greater caution. According to a report released on Friday, the region experienced a 26% rise in fire cases, from 94 incidents in January-February 2023 to 119 in the same period in 2024.
According to Philippines News Agency, spokesperson for BFP-Bicol, during a telephone interview, residents are advised to be vigilant about fire safety, especially with the onset of the dry season. He highlighted common hazards such as overheating, overloading, and short circuits, cautioning against the use of substandard electrical materials and makeshift octopus wiring setups.
Tañajura emphasized the preparedness of BFP-Bicol, noting the availability of a diverse array of emergency response equipment, including fire trucks, rescue trucks, boom trucks, rubber boats, and ambulances, ready to address any incidents in the region. He identified faulty electrical connections, dried grass and leaves, and improperly disposed of cigarette butts as prevalent causes of fires.
Further, Tañajura mentioned ongoing inspections of business establishments and continuous capability training for fire officers to enhance regional fire safety measures. He advised the public to unplug electrical appliances when not in use, remain calm during emergencies, and prioritize calling for help over using social media.
BFP-Bicol is set to commence Fire Prevention Month with an event at Peñaranda Park in the Old Albay District of Legazpi City on March 5. The event will extend to the Bicol University open grounds, engaging students, employees of national government agencies, and other community stakeholders in fire safety awareness activities.
