Bad Weather Causes PHP22.4 Million Crop Damage in Bicol

Bicol Region, Philippines – The Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-Bicol) reported on Friday that heavy rains and flooding caused by a shear line earlier this week have resulted in an estimated PHP22.4 million in agricultural losses across the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, DA-Bicol spokesperson, the initial consolidated reports of agricultural damage came from the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate. Albay reported damages worth PHP146,200, Sorsogon PHP15.1 million, and Masbate PHP7 million. A total of 568 hectares of crops, including rice, were destroyed, leading to a loss of 1,282 metric tons of rice in these provinces.

Guarin also mentioned that the department is prepared to distribute seeds for corn, vegetables, vitamins for livestock, and other assistance to help the affected farmers. Additionally, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol has provided PHP13 million worth of assistance to the affected provinces.
