Astronomical Training to Detect New Asteroids from World-Class Telescopes

Residents of the country will have the opportunity to participate in astronomical training to detect new asteroids from world-class telescopes. The first such exercise is organised by the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam, PABD with the support of the Astronomical Society of Nepal, NASO and in collaboration with the International Astronomical Search Union, IASC. The “Asteroid Search” course will cover asteroid detection techniques such as introduction to Astrometry and Digital Sky Survey mapping, observation of celestial object movement, calibration data and manual celestial object search using Astrometry software.

The online training session will run for two days on the 24th and 25th of September 2021.

Such a project is expected to detect dozens of new asteroids by Bruneians in the next few years. The results of the initial acquisition data from the programme will also help professional astronomers to update the current asteroid orbit information.
