Legazpi City, Philippines – In a significant gathering on Sunday, 1,701 village and Sangguniang Kabataan officials of Albay's second district were sworn into office, urged to give precedence to their constituents' needs in their governance efforts.
According to Philippines News Agency, the newly elected leaders are expected to embody the highest standards of governance. Co emphasized the critical role of barangay officials in shaping the daily lives of their constituents through transparent and accountable decision-making.
The officials, representing the towns of Rapu-Rapu, Manito, Daraga, Camalig, and Legazpi City, were reminded that their pledges are more than ceremonial; they are commitments to uphold the core principles of governance.
In conjunction, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos highlighted the importance of integrity in leadership to the newly elected village officials. In a statement released Sunday, Abalos outlined that true leadership lies in responsibility and service, not in the pursuit of power.
Abalos further encouraged the elected officials to direct their efforts towards community-impactful programs, with a particular focus on nutrition, maternal and child health, and combating illegal drugs.
Moreover, DILG-Albay director Ray Caceres reminded the officials to comply with legal obligations such as the submission of their Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE). This requirement, as stipulated by Republic Act 7166, is crucial and should be completed within 30 days following the election, a deadline set for October 30. Non-compliance with this mandate could hinder the officials from assuming their duties.
