Agusan del Norte Representative Proposes Five-Year Term for Barangay, SK Officials

Agusan del Norte – Agusan del Norte 2nd District Rep. Dale Corvera has introduced House Bill No. 9557, proposing to extend the term of office for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to five years. Corvera argues that the current three-year term is insufficient for these officials to effectively serve their constituents.

According to Philippines News Agency, the short term leads to a cycle of constant orientation and planning during the first year, execution of plans in the second year, and preparation for re-election campaigns in the final year. He shared these views in a statement to the Philippine News Agency on Thursday. The 1987 Constitution and Republic Act No. 7160 currently set the term of barangay officials at three years. However, Corvera believes that an extended term would allow village officials to focus more on delivering services and building stronger relationships with stakeholders. He also pointed out that a longer term could save government resources otherwise spent on frequent training of new officials.
