8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters

Brunei Darussalam remains steadfast under the stance of zero tolerance approach to protect the future of citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam from the effects and dangers of drug abuse. The Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office stressed the matter during the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters, AMMD. Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, as Brunei Darussalam's Head of Delegation also reaffirmed the Sultanate's commitment in supporting regional and international efforts in dealing with the threats of drug smuggling and drug abuse. The meeting was held in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Vilay Lakhamfong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, Lao People's Democratic Republic. During the meeting, a Joint ASEAN Statement was endorsed by the ministers at the 8th AMMD Meeting which reaffirm ASEAN's commitment towards a zero tolerance approach in realizing ASEAN's aspiration of a drug-free region. The joint statement will be delivered at the High-Level Segment at the 67th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in March 2024 in Vienna, Republic of Austria.

The Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office and Heads of Delegation of AMMD and ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters, ASOD also took the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, on matters of mutual interest between ASEAN countries in enhancing cooperation. Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian also held a courtesy call with His Excellency Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of National Development of Republic of Singapore to discuss opportunities for cooperation between the Sultanate and Singapore in dealing with the drug threats and challenges.
