77-Year-Old Seeks Employment at Kalayaan Day Job Fair in Cordillera
CORDILLERA — At the Kalayaan Day Job Fair held on Wednesday, 77-year-old Evelyn Cotaran stood out among hundreds of job seekers hoping to secure employment through the event organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) – Cordillera at a local mall. Cotaran, who previously worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, is seeking a position as a housekeeper.
According to Philippines News Agency, finding local employment has been challenging since her return from Hong Kong in 2017 due to age discrimination. “I worked from 1985 to 2017. I came home because I wanted to be back in my country. Since then, it’s been tough as they say I am too old and not capable of working anymore,” she explained during a media interview at the fair. Despite her age, Cotaran feels strong and capable, driven by a desire to avoid the boredom of inactivity.
Assisted by DOLE in completing her application, Cotaran was referred to Valley Bread, a local bakery and pastry company. Kennerly Bejar Minas, HR coordinator at Valley Bread, noted the rarity of senior citizens applying but affirmed that their company remains open to employing the elderly. “We already have a 70-year-old cook; we’re considering positions for her in production or sanitation,” Minas stated.
The event, boasting 1,559 job vacancies from over 40 private companies and government agencies, was not just about employment but also highlighted the Anti-Age Discrimination Act. This law, effective since July 2016, ensures that individuals are not discriminated against based on age in hiring and employment practices.
DOLE-Cordillera Director Nathaniel Lacambra emphasized the job fair’s broader goal of alleviating poverty and providing independence through employment. “This event is about liberating our people from the hardships they are facing,” Lacambra said during the fair’s opening. He also mentioned the provision of livelihood starter kits for those who might not secure employment immediately.
Meanwhile, other significant employers like SM Supermalls, represented by Irene Peralta, North Luzon regional HR officer, offered about 800 job vacancies in various locations, including the upcoming SM Laoag City Mall.
The job fair also facilitated on-the-spot hiring, with 25-year-old Adrian Bonifacio from Pampanga securing a position immediately. “I am thankful for this opportunity. It’s a great help for job seekers like me,” Bonifacio shared.
