Society needs to play a vital role in caring for the differently abled, OKU including the visually and hearing impaired. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports hoped that through the Braille, Orientation and Mobility, BOM, Workshop, it will give a strong impact not only to target groups but also to the society specifically so that they can see the importance of providing aid to the group. Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, expressed this at the Closing of the BOM Workshop 2019 yesterday afternoon. The function took place at Pusat Bahagia in Kampung Pulaie.
The workshop which has been carried out in 4 phases since last April was attended by 149 participants comprising the parents of visually impaired trainees, government agencies, non-government bodies, the private sector and also individuals. It is hoped to increase empathy and not sympathy towards this group as well as raise society's awareness on life's challenges faced by the group. The workshop was jointly organised by the In-Community Rehabilitation Unit, OKU Section, Community Development Department, Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education; Religious Special Education Unit, Islamic Studies Department; Ophthalmology Department, Ministry of Health and the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind, BDNAB.
