His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday morning attended the Opening Ceremony of the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. The event was held at the Grand Diamond Ballroom, IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Trade Centre, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand. Accompanying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by His Excellency Retired General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, and spouse, Mrs. Naraporn Chan-o-cha.

The Opening Ceremony, which was also attended by other ASEAN Heads of State and Government, commenced with a choir performance of the ASEAN anthem 'The ASEAN Way'.

This was followed by the Opening Statement from His Excellency the Prime Minister of Thailand as this year's Chairman of ASEAN. In his speech, His Excellency welcomed all leaders and delegates attending the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

The Opening Ceremony then continued with the presentation of the 'ASEAN Prize 2019' by the Prime Minister of Thailand to Doctor Jemilah binti Mahmood, Founder of MERCY Malaysia, in recognition of her leading role in various humanitarian missions and disaster management in the international arena.

At this ceremony, His Majesty and the other ASEAN leaders also watched a cultural performance, as well as a video launch of the ASEAN Training Centre for Social Work and Social Welfare; ASEAN Centre for Active Aging and Innovation; and the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue. The three constitute training and knowledge centres for innovation and skills that promote sustainable development for cooperation. The three centres are in addition to the four ASEAN centres already established this year under the Chairmanship of Thailand, bringing the total number of ASEAN centres launched this year to seven.
