His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in a titah stressed that rapid developments across the region including technological advancement, enhanced connectivity and climate change need to be managed and acted upon in order to realise ASEAN's goals. His Majesty made the titah at Plenary Session of the 35th ASEAN Summit yesterday afternoon. The session took place at the Impact Arena, Exhibition and Trade Centre, Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok, Thailand.

In the titah, His Majesty urged for the member states to continue to uphold multilateralism while providing opportunities for their people through a holistic approach of investing in and developing their people, as well as strengthening cross-pillar cooperation. In this regard, His Majesty looks forward to the ASEAN Secretariat's consolidated strategy on the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Accompanying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was His Majesty's son, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The plenary session began with Welcoming Remarks by His Excellency Retired General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister of Thailand as Chairman of ASEAN.

His Majesty in his titah commended Thailand's emphasis on sustainability in various initiatives that had advanced ASEAN's efforts to build a better future for the ASEAN community.

Apart from that, His Majesty also called on the Member States to continue to safeguard ASEAN Centrality and ensure that support for ASEAN-led mechanisms remains strong and relevant through the promotion of dialogue and consultations. Equally important are efforts to further enhance existing relationships and to seek new partnerships that could help ASEAN shape the future of the region, based on mutual respect, benefit and interest. In this matter, Brunei Darussalam is committed towards strengthening the ASEAN Community for an open, inclusive and peaceful region. In concluding the titah, His Majesty extended the full support of ASEAN to Viet Nam, for the country's Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2020.
