Sports continues to play a crucial role in bringing local and international communities together thus contributing towards peace and stability in the respective countries, regionally and globally. The matter was highlighted by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports at the Fifth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports, AMMS in Manila, the Republic of the Philippines yesterday. Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin stressed that Brunei Darussalam alongside other ASEAN Member States strongly supports sports as an important means to realise even further consolidation, integration and stronger cohesiveness in ASEAN, in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025. The representatives also welcomed for the AMMS to come up with ways to further support the realisation of the Culture of Prevention for Peaceful, Inclusive, Resilient, Healthy and Harmonious Society.

Yang Berhormat shared that the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di- Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is committed to facilitating and promoting inclusivity through its sports-for-all approach. The commitments were shown by the designation of cycling as a national pastime and the annual Brunei Darussalam Regatta held in conjunction with the Birthday Celebration of His Majesty which brings together participants from all over the country and the region. Yang Berhormat Dato also informed the meeting that Brunei Darussalam has and will always continue its commitment in fostering stronger friendships and solidarity amongst the international and regional community through hosting of a number of prestigious international and regional sporting competitions. With regards to High Performance Sport, Yang Berhormat Dato welcomed that ASEAN is moving ahead in forging cooperation with Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and look forward to its realisation, particularly in professional capacity building.

Yang Berhormat also had the opportunity to call on His Excellency William I Ramirez, Chairman of the Philippines Sports Commission and His Excellency Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand. Also present was Her Excellency Hajah Johariah binti Haji Wahab, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to the Republic of the Philippines.
