Brunei's initiatives towards environmental sustainability includes the implementation of 'No Plastic Bag Everyday' initiative that commenced on 1st January 2019. The Ministry of Development's Plastic Bottle Free Initiative also hopes to instil a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection among Bruneians. The Minister of Development highlighted the matter at the 8th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Insinyur Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar also said the initiative also encourages a more sustainable lifestyle through the use of reusable products as opposed to single-use items made of detrimental non-biodegradable materials namely plastics. It also stirs the country's awareness of the fourth industrial revolution towards a Smart Nation approach which include efficient environmental monitoring and possibly even more innovative and reliable mitigation measures or corrective mechanisms to counteract any unwanted environmental incidences.

The conference was officiated by His Excellency Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al Fadhly, President of the Islamic Conference of Environment Minister, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The conference opening session began with prizes presentation ceremony of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Award for Environmental Management in the Islamic World (Edition 2018-2019) presented to 17 candidates from 13 Islamic countries. Brunei's delegation also witnessed the presentation of first prize award under the fourth category 'Best leading practices in the field of environmental management for public utility and private associations that can be replicated in the Islamic world' to University Technology Brunei, UTB.

The Conference adopted a number of reports and documents relevant to the issues of the environment and sustainable development in the Islamic world. Among those who joined the delegation was Dayang Doctor Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abd Razak, the Permanent Secretary for Planning, Land Use and Environment at the Ministry of Development. This year's conference carries the theme 'The Role of Cultural and Religious Factors in the Protection of the Environment and Sustainable Development'. The 2-day conference which began on 2d of October, ended with the presentation of draft Declaration and conference's resolution. The ninth session will be held in 2021.
