The Ministers responsible for telecommunication / Information and Communication Technology, ICT of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity, APT, met in Singapore to commit to a connected digital future for the region by adopting the “Singapore Statement on Co-creating a Connected Digital Future in the Asia-Pacific”.
Representing the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the meeting was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications. The delegation included Awang Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Infocommunications, Cybersecurity, Strategy and Corporate at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications.
The Singapore Statement adopted by the Ministers in the Meeting sets out the vision of a connected digital future through the development of telecommunication / ICT in the Asia-Pacific region. Amongst some of the key highlights of the Singapore Statement directly relevant to Brunei Darussalam are: Digital Transformation, Digital Innovation and Creativity and Digital Trust
As part of the Ministerial Roundtable at the APT Ministerial Meeting, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib delivered a statement during the Ministerial Session on digital transformation, and digital innovation and creativity. Yang Berhormat shared Brunei Darussalam’s initiatives in digital transformation from three main perspectives namely institutional, infrastructure development and stakeholders’ involvement. Meanwhile, during the Roundtable dialogue with the Industry, Yang Berhormat mentioned that 5G will become the driving force of the National ICT Development, in line with best practices in the region. Hence, Brunei will be looking into regulatory and licensing framework, spectrum allocation, governance, processes and other facilitating frameworks to ensure that they are responsive and relevant to the needs of the industry, in addition to continuous support and engagement with the industry.
Aside from the meeting, Yang Berhormat held an Informal Ministerial Consultation with His Excellency Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia and His Excellency S. Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information Singapore. During the consultation, the Ministers shared their updates and observations from regional and international best practices as well as encouraged collaboration to enhance regional cooperation and expert assistance on cybersecurity and 5G readiness.
