During His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s visit to the Tutong District yesterday morning, the educational institutions also caught the monarch’s attention. As the nation’s leader who place the importance for the country’s educational development, His Majesty visited a secondary and primary school in the district. His Majesty also took a closer look at the Village Chief institution, the economic activities and visited the homes of several recipients.
His Majesty began the visit at Muda Hashim Secondary School in Tutong. With the motto ‘Towards an Excellent Future’, the school strives its potential and ability towards an excellent and competitive secondary education. The school has 636 students from Year 7 to Pre-Vocational level and more than 120 teachers. The school was established in 1967. From 1971 to 1983, the school was formerly known as Sekolah Menengah Melayu Muda Hashim Tutong. In 1984, the school name was changed to Muda Hashim Secondary School. One of the activities which also attracted the monarch’s interest was the colourful abstract and batik painting using wax.
His Majesty also toured the school library. As a centre for knowledge, the library provide a conducive place and environment for the users with various collection of resources in academic excellence. The library is hope to channel knowledge in education towards raising an informative users. His Majesty’s presence at the school has marked a new history for the school students and teachers.
His Majesty then visited the Pengiran Dipa Negara Pengiran Jaya Primary School in Sengkarai, Cluster 5. The school has 166 pupils. The old building began its operation in 1968. The school name was changed to Pengiran Dipa Negara Pengiran Jaya School in early 2004 following the merging of a primary and secondary school. It was changed back to Pengiran Dipa Negara Pengiran Jaya Primary School after the secondary school was transferred to a new school in 2009.
His Majesty took the opportunity to interact with the school pupils from Pre-School to Year 6. Among the school goals are to raise educated citizens and teaching the pupils towards academic achievements.
The school permanent building was used since the 1st of March 1981 in two streams, namely English and Malay. At that time, the school had more than 160 pupils from Pre-School to Year 6 with 25 teachers.
His Majesty then visited the residence of Awang Haji Mumin bin Abdul Razak, Ketua Kampung of Sengkarai, who is also the Acting Penghulu of Mukim Pekan Tutong and Acting Ketua Kampung of Penabai/ Kuala Tutong. The mukim has a population of 2 thousand 399.
His Majesty proceeded to take a closer look of the crackers processing by Syarikat Hairol Aminah in Kampung Penabai, Kuala Tutong. The company has been active in crackers production since 2007. It has been certified as the One Village One Product of Kampung Penabai Kuala Tutong Consultative Council in 2017. The factory produces several types of flavours made from prawn, sweet potato and fish.
To meet the increasing demand, the company has involved MPK members comprising unemployed mother to help the crackers production. They were formerly the raw prawn supplier to crackers making companies. The company owner hoped to develop the crackers product to international market.
Perusahaan Seri Melati Sendirian Berhad in Kampong Kuala Tutong also caught the monarch’s attention. Perusahaan Seri Melati owned by Haji Abd Rashid bin Haji Mahmood began its operation in 1977. It is the first company in the country to handle boat making and household using fiberglass materials and was able to handle the cruise ship along Sungai Tutong in attracting local and overseas tourist.
The company has provided a 6-month work placement programme for Youth Development Centre, starting January to June this year. It is also hiring 16 locals.
His Majesty continued the visit to a number of houses of cluster and terrace key recipients under the Bukit Beruang National Housing Scheme, Mukim Telisai. The cluster house has an area of 120 square meter. Meanwhile, the terrace unit has an area of 106 square meter. Each cluster and terrace unit has 3 rooms, bathroom and kitchen.
A total of 756 unit of houses were built on the 474 hectares of land by appointed contractor. From the amount, 368 unit are cluster houses and 388 are terrace type. The national housing is a comprehensive housing development with land areas for future public facilities such as schools, mosques, parks, recreational areas and playground.
The historic moment was very much awaited or anticipated and would in time become an oral tradition among the recipients. The awarding of the houses reflects His Majesty’s concern and care for the people and proves the government’s commitment in supporting His Majesty’s aspiration, especially in providing good lasting homes in the effort to raise the quality of the people’s life.
To date, more than 28 thousand unit of houses and land lot were provided under the National Housing Scheme and Land Scheme for the Indigenous nationwide. From the number, a total of 28 thousand 610 unit have been awarded to qualified recipients. 2,695 of them are those residing in the Tutong District’s National Housing Scheme.
The presentation of the house keys clearly reflects the concern and caring attitude of His Majesty towards the welfare and well-being of his subject.
In efforts to catalyst the national housing agenda towards realising the provision of adequate, quality and affordable housing in fulfilling the need of the country’s citizens, the Ministry of Development through the Housing Development Department is currently drafting a policy with the main focus and strategy in providing direction towards the planning and development of a more competitive housing sector.
At the end of the visit, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to attend a Luncheon at the Bukit Beruang Community Hall. The Government of His Majesty continues to implement several housing programmes throughout the country. This is in line with His Majesty’s Vision and Wawasan Brunei 2035 which is to enhance the life quality of the Brunei Darussalam citizens and residents towards a guarantee well-being.
