Following the homicide case which occurred on the 23rd of May 2015, involving the death of local man, Ispawi bin Idris at the Pandan 7 area in Kuala Belait, the Bandar Seri Begawan High Court has sentenced the defendant today. 27 year old Muhammad Zulkifli bin Abdul Jalil pleaded guilty for charges under Section 304 (1) of the Penal Code Chapter 22 which is punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Chief Judge, Yang Amat Arif Dato Paduka Steven Chong Wan Oon sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment starting from the remanded date. The Chief Judge also explained that the mitigating factors brought submitted by the defence as well as the admission of guilt, has led the chief judge to consider that the gravity of the offence is equivalent to life imprisonment. The actual motif of the homicide was to steal the victim's money. The defendant and his partner used sleeping pills, poison and weapons on the victim. The Chief Judge also took into account the impact on the victim's family and concluded that the case is the most serious and should guarantee the heaviest penalty. The case was investigated by the Special Investigations Unit, Royal Brunei Police Force. Deputy Public Prosecutor was Shamshuddin bin Haji Kamaluddin and Prosecutor was Siti Nurjauinah bte Haji Kula. While the Defence Attorney was Ahmad Basuni bin Haji Abbas.
