Knowledge of Sign Language has become an alternative form of communication for the ease of communicating and dealing with the hearing impaired in the context of employment, recreation and life. The Basic Sign Language Workshop raises the awareness of the society in general and stakeholders on the use of sign language to communicate with the hearing impaired.

The 3rd Basic Sign Language Workshop for school teachers, students with Down's syndrome and individuals was officiated by Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretary for Strategy and Policy Management, at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Awang Khairul Anwar bin Haji Johari, the President of the Deaf People's Association in his speech expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to share the special language which is sign language to the public specifically students and teachers, individuals, government and private employees to experience the beauty of the language that is rarely used or not at all.

The briefing 'Bahasa Isyarat Satu Alternatif bentuk Komunikasi' or Sign Language an Alternative Form of Communication was delivered by Dayang Widaiafalena binti Surhan, Education Officer and Head of Hearing Sensory Special Assistance Service Section, Special Education Unit. The briefing among other matters touched on a number of modules in learning the hand forms to spell the alphabet and numbers, basic methods of communication to give greetings and questions as well as activities with the hearing impaired. The 3-day workshop involving 73 participants began yesterday.
