Brunei Darussalam will take part in the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia beginning from the 26th of this month until the 4th of May. The national flag handing over ceremony to national contingent was held yesterday afternoon at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas. Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah binti His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah graced the event. Her Royal Highness is among the athletes who will represent Brunei Darussalam in the netball event.
The recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah was led by Yang Dimuliakan Begawan Pehin Khatib Dato Paduka Haji Mustafa bin Haji Murat.
Yang Berhormat Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in his speech among others touched on Brunei participation in the Arafura Games aims to compete with international athletes towards measuring the ability of national athletes in preparing for the SEA Games in The Philippines this November.
The national flag was handed over to Awang Haji Zafri bin Haji Mohamed, Acting Director of Youth and Sports as Chef de Mission of national contingent. The national contingent comprised of 23 people from 14 athletes including two para athletes and nine officials. Brunei Darussalam athletes will participate in Netball and swimming while sports event will be participated by athletes from the Paralympic Association. The bi-annual event is a multi-sport tournament organised by the Government of Northern Australia Province. The national contingent will leave for Darwin on Tuesday. Also present was Her Excellency Nicola Rosenblum, High Commissioner of Australia to Brunei Darussalam.
