The Ulama or Muslim Clerics are the successors of Prophets who deliver the messages and teachings of Islam to the ummah or followers. They are also shields that block vice and sins and the people who continue the struggles of the Prophets in upholding good and the truth. The remarks were made by the State Mufti who also stressed that true Ulama can never be bought or corrupted. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned delivered the keynote speech at the official opening of the Muzakarah Ulama Nusantara Mazhab Syafii or the Meeting of the Malay Archipelago's Syafii Sect Clerics yesterday morning. The ceremony was held at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA.

Yang Berhormat also touched on warak and tawaduk or fear of committing sins and humility which are the main characteristics of the Ulama. The State Mufti added Tawaduk or humbleness does not bring the scholars down but elevates their status.

Earlier the State Mufti launched the 'Ensiklopedia Mazhab Shafii Negara Brunei Darussalam, Volumes 1 to 4 published by the Syafii Sect Research Centre of UNISSA. Apart from increasing the knowledge resources which contain facts and comprehensive data, the encyclopedia is also hoped to be a reference for future generations. The set can be obtained at the UNISSA Research and Publication Centre.

During the ceremony, Yang Berbahagia Sahibus Samahah Dato Seri Doctor Haji Zulkifi bin Mohammad Al-Bakri, the Mufti of the Federal Territory of Malaysia presented a working paper titled, "and the Islamic Legal System: Towards Peace and Justice." Yang Berbahagia stressed that the Islamic Legal System was formulated through just regulations or laws in order to ensure it fulfils the needs of the people in protecting life and property as well as honour or moral. According to Yang Berbahagia, the Islamic Legal System is guided by Allah the Almigthy and is different from legal systems recreated by humans whose capabilities and strengths are limited.

The event was attended by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office. The meeting which carries the theme, 'ulama, Leader of the Ummah' is part of programmes in conjunction with Bandar Seri Begawan, the Asian Capital of Islamic Civilisation 2019. It is a platform for the meeting of Ulama and prominent regional and international Muslim scholars to share their studies on the Syafii Sect. Apart from UNISSA students and academics, the day-long meeting was also attended by 450 participants comprising representatives of government departments; the private sector; mosque takmir committees; Mukim and Village Consultative Council Committees; students of institutions of higher learning, secondary schools and the public.
