His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Chairman of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Committee of Governors yesterday morning graced a ceremony to present Braille Machines, contributed by the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to 42 visually impaired students. The ceremony took place at the Arts and Handicrafts Training Centre in the capital.
Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs as member of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Committee of Governors; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yusof, Second Minister of Defence as Chairman of the Yayasan Board of Directors; and Dato Paduka Awang Eddie bin Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, the Managing Director of Yayasan.
The ceremony commenced with the reading of Al-Quran verses by Awang Haji Mohd Khairulzaman bin Haji Mohd Saleh, a student from the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute.
In the welcoming speech, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi among other things expressed hope that the Braille Machines contributed by the Yayasan can help to improve the student’s capabilities and potential so that they can become a successful as well as independent individual and capable of contributing to the society and the nation as part of the nation’s development agents in making the Wawasan Negara 2035 a success.
His Royal Highness then presented the Perkins Braille machines to 20 visually impaired students from primary and secondary schools, Schools Department, Ministry of Education, and to 22 other visually impaired students from religious schools and religious education institutions, Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs. The selected students have been identified by their respective schools to assist them in their learning whether at school or at home.
Doa Selamat was read by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin.
His Royal highness then proceeded to take a closer look at the exhibition that highlighted the government and non-government initiatives in assisting the visually-impaired as well as providing assistive equipment to visually impaired students. The exhibition was joined by the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education; Special Education Section, Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs; Community Development Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; as well as the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind.
Apart from the Braille machines, the Yayasan also contributed two Braille embosser machines which can print the student’s work and learning material including notes, exercises, tests and exams. The Embosser machines will be placed at the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education and at the Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The presence of His Royal Highness at this ceremony reflected the continuous attention from His Royal Highness on the efforts of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in caring for the welfare and well-being of the special needs in the country.
