The Director of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre said that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world and annually 9.6 million people die from cancer. However, Dato Seri Laila Jasa Doctor Babu Sukumaran explained that one third of these cancer-related deaths can be prevented. He explained the matter at a media conference in conjunction with World Cancer Day yesterday morning at the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre.

Dato Seri Laila Jasa Doctor Babu Sukumaran, who is also the Director of the Brunei Cancer Centre shared that in Brunei Darussalam, cancer is the number one killer, and over 600 new cases are diagnosed every year. Dato Seri Laila Jasa Doctor Babu Sukumaran said under the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Ministry of Health and the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Center have all the adequate facilities to treat almost all types of cancer locally, with very few cases that need to be sent for treatment overseas. Datin Doctor Hajah Noraslinah binti Haji Ramlee, Head of Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Unit at the Brunei Cancer Centre said that cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early.
