Sustainable development in the town planning context, means development planning that takes into account the physical, social, environmental and economical aspects. The Minister of Development is informed that through the planning function, methods currently used include the area zoning approach for various uses, including economy that can generate the national revenue, by providing opportunities to foreign investors as well as small and medium entrepreneurs to open economic and business opportunities to generate economic growth in the country.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar made the speech at the launch of the World Town Planning Day 2018 Celebration, yesterday morning. The function took place at the Ministry of Development. According to Yang Berhormat, to achieve the objective of Wawasan Brunei 2-ribu 35, it is important for the government to focus development on sectors that can contribute to the increase of the Gross Domestic Product, GDP and contribute to a more dynamic and sustainable economy. Yang Berhormat added that area planning should focus on sectors that can open up more economic opportunities and broadens business in the country through an increase in local and foreign investments, downstream activities and other economic clusters apart from the oil and gas industry, which will in turn provide job opportunities particularly for the locals.

Yang Berhormat then explained that to achieve a sustainable development goal, there is a need for changes from the aspect of approaches in land usage to ensure a peaceful, comfortable and harmonious way of life. The ministry need to be aware that efficient land usage can help coordinate state land use comprehensively through the zoning of business, housing, park, green and recreation areas, as well as industry, schools and others. This is aimed at producing a conducive and united environment as well as a more optimal distribution of state land use.

The function ran concurrently with the launch of the Supplementary Guideline for the Building Planning Standard as well as the Housing Development Planning and Standard Guideline. The guidelines are aimed at coordinating the relevant planning parameters and planning approval application process, in line with current developments. The celebration carried the theme 'Planning For Change Towards Sustainable Development'.
