Tourism is one of the industries that relies most heavily on aviation. By facilitating tourism, air transport helps generate economic growth. The Gross Domestic Product, GDP generated by the aviation sector in Brunei Darussalam was recorded in 2017/2018 at 47.8 million dollars. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, ministers of Communications shared the matters in a message in commemoration of International Civil Aviation Day 2018.

According to Yang Berhormat, the enhanced air connectivity in Brunei Darussalam has also contributed to the steady growth of air traffic passengers and tourist arrivals through Brunei International Airport. The number of passenger has increased 4 point 3 percent in the third quarter of this year compare to the same period of last year. The growth is targeted to increase in the next 2 years.

Yang Berhormat said that Brunei Darussalam is now operating to 17 countries with a total of 30 destinations. The number of destinations are expected to increase to 4 by next year. Meanwhile, a total number of 6 airlines have been operating in the country and the number is expected to increase to 7 operators by the year 2019 with the number of airlines operating in Brunei Darussalam to double in the next 10 years.

As such, the Minister of Communications said Brunei Darussalam will work on attracting airlines via closer coordination and collaboration with the tourism sector; by increasing the attractiveness and efficiency of our airport and its facilities.

International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization every 7 December to recognise the importance of aviation, especially international air travel, to the social and economic development of the world. This year's celebration themed 'Working Together To Ensure No Country is Left Behind' which highlights the collective approach for Traffic Flow Management. The theme also serves as an important reminder of the role of cooperation and partnership in everything we do in aviation.
