Diabetes disease is the third leading cause of death in Brunei Darussalam after cancer and heart disease. Sadly, the majority who suffers from diabetes are from the men and women at young age and their productive. The Minister of Health said diabetes disease suffers by the young group, has affected the citizen productivity in the country apart from the government needs to cover high expenses for diabetes treatment and other complications cause by diabetes. Hence, urged Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, diabetes and its impact cannot be taken lightly. The Minister of Health voiced the matter in a message in conjunction with the World Diabetes Day which carries a theme: "Family and Diabetes".
Yang Berhormat added that 50 percent of sight problem in the country, such as blindness are caused by diabetes retinopathy. Whereas, 50 to 60 percent of kidney disease since previous years are caused by diabetes.
Research by the STEPwise Approach to Surveillance Population Survey of Non-communicable Diseases (STEPS NCDs) and Risk Factors in Brunei Darussalam for 2016, 9.7 percent or at least 29 thousand adults are suffer from diabetes. The Minister of Health added that the statistic is on par with the global where one from 2 adults is not aware of suffering from diabetes. Hence, early detection and treatment are vital to prevent from diabetes.
Diabetes disease can be prevented by practising several healthy way of life such as looking after daily food consumption and active in physical activities. A solid support from family members also shown the major impact in enhancing the health status of diabetics and can reduce the risk of diabetes complication. Therefore, the Minister of Health believes, diabetes preventive control and measures can be started at home.
The Minister of Health hopes that all community in the country should be responsible to maintain at enhancing awareness on diabetes disease and to be initiative in knowing, preventing and handling diabetes in life. By increasing awareness of the public on diabetes, will able to change the mindset of Brunei's society in the efforts to prevent, control and tackle diabetes as well as will contribute towards reducing the risk of premature death cause by diabetes complication in the country.
