233 graduates received degrees and diplomas in various fields at the 8th Convocation Ceremony of the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College this morning. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to confer the degrees and diplomas to the graduates. The ceremony was held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs, as Chairman of the KUPU SB Council; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti as member of the KUPU SB Council; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, Chief Syari’e Judge as member of the KUPU SB Council; and Doctor Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Ra’es of KUPU SB.

The ceremony began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the State Mufti.

The International Convention Centre echoed with the mass reading of Al-Quran Verses of Luqman and Al’Alaq by the graduates. Among other things, the Surah’s or verses stressed Al-Quran as the Holy Book which contains teachings such as guidance towards righteousness as well as blessings for people who do good deeds, in particular those who perform prayer, pay the Zakat or tithe and believe in the Day of Reckoning.

In his welcoming address, Doctor Haji Adanan described the Critical Thinking Skill and Islamic Communication Course as the Univesrity College’s core course in upholding His Majesty’s Titah that emphasises the need for KUPU SB and other institutions of higher learning to provide critical thinking experience.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then delivered the Titah of the Chancellor’s Authority.

Out of the 233 graduates, 24 were awarded the Master’s Degree in Religious Teaching 22 received the Post Graduate Diploma in Religious Teaching; 110 obtained the Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Teaching, and 77 received the Higher Diploma in Religious Teaching.

KUPU SB currently has 3 faculties, namely the Faculty of Usuluddin, the Faculty of Syariah and the Faculty of Education as well as 8 centres which include the Knowledge Centre, Language Centre and the Centre of Study for the Understanding of Ahli Sunnah Waljama’ah.

In its new curriculum KUPU SB has made Islamic History a core course with contents designed according to the school syllabus. Besides that the KUPU SB Agriculture Club which was established last year has progressed through the Agro-Industry pilot academic project in collaboration with a company in the agricultural sector.

Towards achieving its vision and objective as a well-known international standard university in the Malay Archipelago, KUPU SB continues to win the trust of the international institutes of higher learning and university association. KUPU SB aims to produce outstanding and authoritative human resource in Islamic Religious Teaching to create a learned, devout and pious community and nation in line with the teachings of the Ahli Sunnah Waljamaah as well as uphold the status of Islam as the country’s official religion.

Doa selamat was read by the State Mufti.

The establishment of KUPU SB represents a unique Islamic landmark by elevating the study of religious teaching and increasing the wealth of Kitab Melayu Turath or early era Malay religious books. With foundations in the integration of knowledge, training, research, services, technology and holistic self-identity as enshrined in the mission of its establishment, KUPU SB shines proudly and to one day be recognised as an international standard and well-known higher learning institution that is the pride of the country. This is in line with His Majesty’s aspiration for KUPU SB to become an institution blessed by Allah the Almighty and capable of serving the country and the Muslim ummah in general.
