Bandar Seri Begawan has the honour to be named as the Capital of Islamic Culture in Asia for 2019, together with several cities in the Arab and African regions. The declaration was made during the 9th Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers (ICCM), in Muscat, Oman, in November 2015. The proclamation is an important landmark for the Sultanate.

The facts was shared by Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, when he chaired the first meeting of the Bandar Seri Begawan Steering Committee as the Capital of Islamic Culture in Asia 2019. With the recognition, Yang Berhormat said those cities are given the honour as to be at par with Al-Quds Al-Sharif. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said that the golden opportunity should be utilised fully by promoting Brunei as a true Islamic nation to the world.

The meeting, among other things, discussed the preparatory programs in celebrating Bandar Seri Begawan as the Capital of Islamic Culture in Asia 2019. It was also attended by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti as the Advisor of the Bandar Seri Begawan Steering Committee; and Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs as the Co-Deputy Chairman.
