Yesterday Afternoon, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and delegation also visited the Maritime Museum Brunei Darussalam at Jalan Kota Batu. The Shipwreck gallery exhibits the discovery of the Brunei Shipwreck in 1997. It is an important discovery in Brunei’s maritime history, and attracted the interest of the delegation.
Upon arrival Her Royal Highness was welcomed by Datin Paduka Doktor Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Awang Mohamad Jefri bin Haji Sabli, Acting Director of Museums. The Shipwreck Gallery displays more than 13 thousand artefacts. The discovery has provided tangible proof of the trading objectives of this fleet as what Brunei was once before as the trading empire in Southeast Asia in the 15th to 16th century recorded by foreign travellers from Arab, China and Europe. The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum is not only aims to provide one exhibition hall but also as an educational and research institution which will provide inspiration to develop a nation civilization to the citizen and resident especially to the young generation.
