The 12th Asia-Europe Summit Meeting, ASEM, is an important platform for leaders from both continents to work together in tackling global issues and achieve sustainable development. ASEM is not only an influential platform for comprehensive cooperation in enhancing connectivity in all dimensions, it is also a dialogue platform for various issues including politics, economics and international.

ASEM was established in 1996, as a result of the Dialogue and Cooperation Forum between Asia and Europe. Brunei Darussalam is one of the 26 founding countries of ASEM. The ASEM Heads of Nations or Governments will meet in a biennial summit to determine ASEM priorities. ASEM plays a role as the forum for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia with the objective of strengthening relations between the 2 continents.

Belgium is the host country for the 12th ASEM summit which will gather heads of nations and governments from 51 European and Asian nations, representatives from the European Union, EU, and the ASEAN Secretary-General. The President of the European Council, Mr. Donald Tusk is expected to chair the ASEM summit. The discussion will focus on the summit’s theme, “Europe and Asia: Global Partners against Global Challenges”. The leaders will also work to strengthen dialogue and cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, connectivity, sustainable development and climate, security challenges such as issues on terrorism and cyber security. The summit is also expected to discuss the EU’s strategy to connect Europe and Asia.

The 12th ASEM is seen as a significant and timely gathering with the increasing interaction between the 2 continents, trade deals and cooperation as well as stronger involvement in security cooperation. For ASEM, cultivating connection with the people is a vital element in developing the importance of the 2-continent forum apart from exchanging views on challenges towards the 3 main pillars of ASEM namely political, economic and financial issues as well as social and cultural.
