The 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign is streamlined in raising greater awareness among women, including prevention measures and facility-access to the counselling services and treatment. The campaign was held yesterday afternoon through the collaboration between the Health Promotion Centre, the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) and the Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group.
It was organised by the Health Promotion Centre. Among those present was Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Awang Ash’ari, Member of the Legislative Council. According to Doctor Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, Head of the Health Promotion Centre, the main cause of breast cancer is yet to be identified. Every women face the risk of getting breast cancer. In this regard, Doctor Hajah Norhayati emphasised women to practice a healthy lifestyle and go for regular check-ups to detect the disease at the earliest stage. The measures, she added, are among the effective ways of minimising the risks.
A forum titled “Breast Cancer: Information You Should Know” was also held by a three-member panel. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Brunei. According to the statistics by the Ministry of Health, the number of new breast cancer cases was rising steadily. The 2013-to-2016 statistics showed diagnosed cases raised from 77 to 101 cases.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of the disease. The Ministry of Health will hold various awareness programs and talks until March next year, targeting working women both in the government and private sectors, as well as students of higher learning institutions. The campaign carries the theme “Fight Breast Cancer, Wear It Pink “.
