Cardiovascular Disease including heart attack and stroke are the leading cause of deaths worldwide. In Brunei Darussalam, Cardiovascular disease is the second highest cause of death contributing to 29% percent of deaths in 2017. According to the Minister of Health, most people thought that heart disease may only happen during old age, but in reality the number of deaths among those at the below the age of 75 is increasing. The Minister said the trend was very disturbing as more and more people suffer from heart disease symptoms at a younger age. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar highlighted the matter in a message on the occasion of World Heart Day 2018, which carries the theme, ‘Jantung Ku, Jantung Mu’ or ‘My Heart, Your Heart’.

The minister said over 40% there were premature deaths due to cardiovascular disease in 2017, in the 35 to 64 age bracket. Among the factors which caused cardiovascular disease in the country are obesity, sedentary life style, smoking, unbalanced diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol dan diabetes. Hence, World Heart Day which is celebrated every September 29 is one of the platforms in increasing public awareness and knowledge on heart disease and in reminding that cardiovascular disease can be prevented by taking measures on the risk factors of heart disease.

The Minister of Health emphasised that cardiovascular disease can be prevented by taking several changes in daily life which is not only to give benefits to heart healthy currently but also in the future. Three measure that can prevent heart disease are:

– Practices health and balanced diet

– Practices more active life style with conducting physical activity with medium intensity

– No smoking

Through the preventive measure, it is not only increase heart healthy, but also can prevent non-communicable disease due to increase life quality.
