His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Hajji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office as the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei, UTB yesterday morning consented to officially open the university's 5th Convocation Festival. The festival which takes place at the UTB School of Design Complex is organised in conjunction with the UTB's convocation ceremony on the 29th of this month.
Upon arrival His Royal Highness was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education as the Chairman of the UTB Council and Professor Doctor Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The ceremony began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa' Selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then officiated the 5th Convocation Festival of Universiti Teknologi Brunei.
'PIE CUBE E-S', is the theme of this year's Convocation Festival. It highlights six values which should be understood and practised by every member of the UTB fraternity in order to achieve the overall vision which is to be a university that impacts on the community. The six values are Pious, Professional, Passionate, Innovative, Engaging and Scholarly.
His Royal Highness also officiated the recently completed UTB School of Design Complex by signing the plaque. The complex is to accommodate the newly established school which offers two new degree programmes in Architecture and Product Design.
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then began a tour of UTB by visiting the University Shop which sells university merchandise featuring the university's official mascot, Awang Jubli Bin Emas (A.J.).
As in the previous year, the convocation festival also showcases the initiatives and activities of students and graduands as well as UTB as a whole, which represent the six core values Pious, Professional, Passionate Innovative, Engaging and Scholarly.
Pious means to embrace and cultivate the value of the Malay Islamic Monarchy, MIB. It is the aspiration to uphold the Islamic faith and patriotism with honesty and full commitment and to practise noble, disciplined personality and cultural values with the guidance of Allah the Almighty.
The 'PROFESSIONALISM' exhibition showcases the UTB's strategy in upgrading the professionalism of students and graduands alike through accredited programmes and students involvement with professional bodies. The exhibition also features the students' early exposure to the professional world including the establishment of the Student Chapters at the university.
The 'PASSIONATE' component reflects that the UTB fraternity should rise with a strong drive and consistent commitment to realise the university's mission and vision. The exhibition also showcases the projects of First Class Honours degree graduands. The projects include the Gamification of Learning Management System from the Creative Computing Programme, Crime Record Management and Analysis using GIS from the Computing System Programme, Production of 500MTD Methanol via Coal Gasification from the Faculty of Engineering, Self-Trackam from the Creative Computing Programme and Cylist-hub from the Computing System Programme.
The Robotics exhibition named The Garden of Robotics attracted the interest of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. It displays several robotic projects including the Design and Technology on 3D Printings which shows how 3D products are designed, modelled and fabricated using a 3D printer. Another project called the Cost Effective Line Following Robot for Hospital Delivery was also showcased. The project shows how materials were transported within the hospital in the most cost-effective way. The Pros-the-tic Hand and Task-Based Control-Based Analysis was also exhibited. The project demonstrates the development of Prosthetic Hand using a 3D printer.
The exhibition on Innovation shows the ability to bring creative ideas into life resulting in enhanced performance and growth through efficiency, quality and productivity. Innovation also helps to optimise the use of available resources to lead in research, teaching and learning and improve operational efficiency. The projects include the I-o-T Based Solar Powered Car Interior Cooling and Monitoring System, CheckMate: An Artificially Intelligent System for Assisting in Diagnosis of Minor Illnesses, Effectiveness of I-Centre and Measuring the factors affecting entrepreneurial intention amongst UTB School of Business Students.
UTB's aspiration to establish and enrich constructive relations with all stakeholders through constant and supportive communication is showcased through the 'Engaging' exhibition. The display shows the UTB's engagement with the industry and academics at various levels including the government and the public. The Scholarly component means Knowledge, reflects the university's desire to become a university dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge. The exhibition showcases projects by graduating postgraduate students.
The Convocation Festival is held annually to fete students who have completed their studies. A number of programmes are organised in conjunction with this year's festival including a Khatam Al-Quran Ceremony, UTB Biggest Heroes, EKK Open Week, Bowling Competition and UTB Leadership Programme.
