The 39th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Assembly officiated by The Honourable Teo Chee Han, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore among other things touched on AIPA's contributions to ASEAN's future.
According to the Honourable, as Parliamentarians, AIPA's support for ASEAN project is vital against the backdrop of uncertainty and change. The Honourable added, the Parliaments represent the people, make the laws; and help explain to the people the challenges of the world, and how to respond to them collectively. Only through the combined efforts can ASEAN continue to be a cornerstone for peace and prosperity in the world. Brunei Darussalam was represented by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council. Speaking at the first plenary session, Speaker of the Legislative Council explained that Brunei Darussalam will continue to give support to AIPA's aspiration towards peace and security for the people in the region. Yang Berhormat Pehin also said that the countries will share and exchange views with members of AIPA towards a best practice.
His Excellency Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi, the ASEAN Secretary-General in his speech during the assembly stated on ASEAN's policy and anticipation for future challenges. His Excellency added, the ties with lawmakers from AIPA will forge closer networking with the people and members of the public. The 5-day general assembly will discuss on regional issues. Themed "Towards a Resilient and Innovative Community", AIPA is hope to provide directions for the development and execution of ASEAN agendas.
