Since its introduction in the 30’s, the Regatta which was formerly known as Boat Race is becoming more popular up to the reign of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Reminiscing on the sports which began since the reign of the Second Sultan of Brunei, Al-Marhum Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin, the sport is not only seen as one that unites the people but it also helps in developing and enhancing confidence. The regatta also has the potential to be further developed from the aspects of tourism and economic activities that can promote Brunei Darussalam as a Tourism Destination Centre.
The regatta was revived during the reign of Al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Akazul Khairi Waddien, the 27th Sultan of Brunei followed by the reign of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the 28th Sultan of Brunei up to the reign of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam who himself is a regatta enthusiast like his father, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien.
The high spirit of sportsmanship shown by the participants has raised the popularity of the regatta which remains until today. The national water sports held over the eras, rich in history, heritage and tradition helps to promote the One Village, One Product in effort to generate economic growth for small and medium enterprises in the country.
