The country marks another history in its medical field after performing the first mechanical thrombectomy or clot removal that caused a stroke from a local patient. The operation was carried out on the 13th of July on 33-year-old, Hii Hin Chung. The procedure was a collaborative effort between the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, BNSRC and the Radiology Department of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital.
Hii, a car parts salesman, was discovered by work colleagues and found to have left -sided weakness. After given treatment, he made a good recovery and on discharge he was able to move objects with his left hand well and able to walk independently.
In a media conference held yesterday morning at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre, PJSC, Doctor Dayangku Siti Nur Ashikin binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Tengah, Director of BNSRC, who is also a Consultant Neurologist said it is a great example of successful stroke treatment through early action, skilled workforce and good cooperation between the healthcare institutions in the country.
Stroke has been recorded as the fourth leading cause of death in the country from 2012 to 2016. The main risk factors for stroke includes high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Also present during the media conference were Dr. Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Awang Besar, Executive Director of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre and Dr. Sankarakumar Sambandamurthy, Consultant Radiologist.
