Brunei Darussalam recorded 16,104 blood donations last year. Out of the number, 2,973 are newly registered blood donors. Statistics recorded, according to the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Professional at the Ministry of Health, show that Brunei Darussalam has achieved the objective suggested by the World Health Organisation, WHO namely the annual achievement of the total blood donors are within 1-3 percent from the population in order to meet the country's need in handling emergency situation. Doctor Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abdul Latif, was speaking this morning at the Launch of Blood Donation Campaign at the Ministry of Health.
According to Doctor Haji Zulaidi, the Ministry of Health through the Blood Donation Centre, Laboratory Services Department will always cooperate with the public and private sector to organise blood donation activities and campaigns. The private sector involvement such as today is welcomed. This is suitable with the ministry's approach that health is everyone business. With the continuous effort, the blood stock will be sufficient and safe. The safety of the blood will be ensured in accordance with the international standard before given to the patients.
More than 300 people took part in the campaign organised by the Power Transmission Distribution Technology Sendirian Berhad in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 72 birthday. The blood donated can help save patients who need blood transfusion and to increase the blood stock for the use of all hospitals in the country.
