The World Health Organisation, WHO estimates that 1.25 million lives are lost each year from road traffic accidents. The risk of accidents occurring increases by 4 times when drivers use mobile phones while driving. The Minister of Communications shared the matter during the launch of the project on Empowering Resilient Communities Towards Wawasan 2035 and the launch of the Prudence on the Road Campaign. Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof said that based on operations conducted by the Land Transport Department in April and May this year alone, 10 drivers have been imposed compounds and SiKAP demerit points. The practise of not wearing seat belts while driving is also a value that needs to be fixed and this issue needs to be taken seriously by communities in the country, especially drivers.
The Minister of Communications explained that the Empowering Resilient Communities Towards Wawasan 2035 programme supports the 'Whole of Nation' approach which stresses the integrated involvement between the government, private sector, non-government organisations (NGO) and the community to achieve greater impact and progress, resilience, especially in terms of the involvement of the Red Crescent Association with the Ministry of Communications. The Minister of Communications believes that the Empowering Resilient Communities programme and the Prudence on the Road Campaign provides extended benefits especially in making a culture of self-safety awareness and in instilling prudent driving among road users.
Earlier, the Minister of Communications presented the Ranks Insignia to Datin Hajah Dayang Siti Hajar binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Awang Yussof, the Honorary Lifelong President as well as appointment certificates to National Council members and National Committee members of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association Fund and Special Project for the 2018/2020 session. This year, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association celebrates the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day with the launch of the Empowering Resilient Communities Towards Wawasan 2035 programme.
The ceremony ran concurrently with the Prudence on the Road Campaign. Also present were Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications; Doktor Awang Haji Supry bin Haji Awang Ladi, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications AND Awang Haji Muhammad Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim, President of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the public especially road users on the importance of being prudent on the road and being responsible in obeying road traffic laws and regulations, especially in celebrating the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
