Brunei Darussalam moves a step further in efforts to protect the environment. The Plastic Bottle Free Initiative launched this afternoon is among efforts by the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, JASTRe to reduce plastic waste which should be disposed at the proper disposal sites. Speaking during the World Environment Day 2018 and the launch of the Plastic Bottle Free Initiative, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development said the ministry is committed to the initiative and intends to become the first ministry to be free of plastic bottles in line with measures taken by citizens of the world to combat environmental pollution caused by plastic materials and items.

During the event, the Minister of Development launched a video clip of the World Environment Day which will be telecast by Radio Television Brunei. The video clip will be uploaded the Ministry's and JASTRe's website, social media, facebook and instagram. Yang Berhormat also distributed water bottle alternatives in the form of 'water tumblers' to Heads of Departments under the Ministry of Development. Also present were Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, the Permanent Secretary for Technical and Professional; Doctor Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abd Razak, the Acting Permanent Secretary of Administration and Finance, both at the Ministry of Development and Awang Haji Amer Hishamuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria, the Director General of Public Works.
