The trust given to amil or tithe collectors who are appointed to collect tithe and property tithes must be carried out with full responsibility, and in accordance to the stipulated regulation. This was stated by Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs during the Presentation of Credentials to Tithe and Property Tithe Collectors Nationwide for the Year 1439-1440 Hijrah, corresponding to 2018-2019. The ceremony took place yesterday morning at Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.
Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom, as the Vice President of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council reminded that tithe payments for Muslims is an individual obligations that must be fulfilled and should not be taken lightly.
This year, 310 tithe collector have been appointed for 138 areas nationwide. 173 tithe collector have been appointed for 79 areas in the Brunei Muara District, 23 tithe collectors for 15 areas in Belait District, 48 tithe collectors 28 areas in Tutong District, and 25 tithe collectors for 12 areas in Temburong District. Meanwhile, 41 tithe collectors from the Islamic Religious Council has been appointed for 4 areas to collect tithes from officers and staff of the said department.
Also present was Awang Haji Mohamad Serudin bin Hj Timbang, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Policy and Religion at the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Last year, the total tithe collected nationwide has increased over 949 thousand dollars from 937 thousand dollars from the previous year. Property tithe collection has also improved to over 17 million 485 thousand dollars from over 17 million 413 thousand dollars in 2016.
