The spirit of brotherhood and closeness which they shared more than 40 years ago never really disappeared from students who stayed at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College hostel. That spirit was evident this morning during a Family Day celebration which was organised to rekindle the friendship. The gathering took place at Kampung Parit Recreation Park in Mukim Pengkalan Batu.
In attendance were Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Abdul Hamid @ Haji Sabli bin Haji Arshad, Member of the Legislative Council and Dato Paduka Seri Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Johan, former Commissioner of Police. They began the activity with a warming up session, followed by sports activities. The event was organised by former SOAS College hostel residents with intention to revitalise the close relations that they had in their young days. Since its formation five years ago, the group now has more than 200 members and have organised a number of activities.
The joy and excitement on their faces during the gathering reflected the memories of living together under one roof as SOAS College hostel boys between the nineteen sixties and nineteen eighties. The family gathering showed their solidarity, understanding as well as strength as part of the Ummah or Muslim nation. This should be maintained not only among close family members but also distant relatives as well as those living far away. There is no word to describe the closeness shown by the former hostel boys. The happiness shone not only on their faces but also the faces of their wives, children and grandchildren. A reflection also of what the National Family Day aspires and represents.
