Musabaqah Al-Quran Memorisation and Its Interpretation

20 participants presented their recitations in the Final of the National Musabaqah Al-Quran Memorisation and its Interpretation for 1444 Hijrah. The two-day event is held yesterday morning at Dewan Muzakarah, International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The Musabaqah is an annual event organised by the MABIMS Al-Quran Dissemination and Studies Centre. It aimed to encourage the country’s Muslim ummah to love the Quran through memorisation, especially among children and teenagers including students.

Handover of Donations

The handover of donations under the Titian Kasih Project of the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam was held yesterday afternoon at the Association’s Headquarters in Anggerek Desa, Berakas.

Donations to 14 underprivileged families were presented by Dayang Hajah Siti Hafsah binti Haji Abdul Halim, the Association’s Commissioner. The activity aimed to share joy with the underprivileged community for the upcoming month of Ramadhan, besides fostering and strengthening self-identity, discipline and teamwork among association members.

Contract Signing Ceremony

The Contract Signing Ceremony for the Flyover Construction Project at the Muara-Tutong Highway Junction, Tanjung Kajar Industrial Site Settlement was held yesterday afternoon, at Dewan Atria Simpur, Public Works Department Headquarters. The project as a vision-leading strategy is one of the continuous and resilient efforts to ensure the provision and maintenance of an efficient and safe road assets network for use.

Present was Engineer Awang Haji Amer Hishamuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria, Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure, Housing and Professional at the Ministry of Development. Representing the Ministry of Development was Awang Haji Shaharuddin Khairul bin Haji Anuar, Acting Director General of Public Works and Awang Rafitra bin Haji Abdul Razak, Acting Director of Roads, Public Works Department. While Awang Mohamad Zul Fakhri bin Mohd. Sofian and Awang Kua Tshin Heng signed on behalf of the contractors.

Jalinan Kasih Project

Several groups namely senior citizens, orphans, new converts and single mothers nationwide are the focus of the 15th Jalinan Kasih Project organised by Radio Television Brunei, RTB. The project organised by the Radio Programme Section involved nine local companies. The launching ceremony took place at a hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Present was Awang Haji Azman bin Haji Abdul Rahim, Acting Director of RTB. The project is inline with RTB’s slogan ‘Sentiasa Bersama Biskita’ which is not just limited through radio and television, but also by meeting the community in all four districts.

In Belait District, five families received donations from several local companies. The project is part of RTB’s social responsibility in together supporting the government’s vision to create a loving and caring community for the less fortunate and underprivileged.

Presentation of Appointment Letters for Amils

362 Amils or Tithe Collectors were appointed for 142 zakat or tithe collection points nationwide. Meanwhile, 53 amils comprising Officers and staff of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council Department were appointed for tithe collection in the four districts. The Presentation of Appointment Letters to Amils for 1444 to 1445 Hijrah corresponding to 2023 to 2024 were held simultaneously nationwide yesterday morning.

In Brunei Muara District, the ceremony was held at Suri Seri Begawan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque, Kampung Manggis/ Madang. On hand to present the appointment letters was Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs as Vice Yang Di-Pertua of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.

Tithe collection and payment can be made at mosques, suraus, religious halls, Amil residences, the Tithe Collection and Distribution Division, Islamic Religious Council Department in Brunei Muara District and the branches in the three other districts. Tithe payment via online will be open from the 1st until 28th of Ramadhan 1444 Hijrah.

Presentation of Appointment Letters

Also held in the three other districts was a presentation of Appointment Letters for the Amils given the responsibility to collect tithe payments for Ramadhan this year.

At Zainab Mosque, Kampung Lumut in Belait District, 24 Amils received Appointment Letters for 15 collection areas in the district. The certificates were presented by Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mazanan bin Haji Yusof, Assistant Mufti for Buhuth, State Mufti Department, as a member of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.

At Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam Mosque, Sengkarai in Tutong District, 58 Amils were appointed for 30 areas in the district. The Appointment Letters were presented by Yang Arif Dato Seri Setia Haji Johar bin Haji Muhamad, Syariah High Court Judge as a Member of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.

While in Temburong District, 26 Amils for 13 areas received Appointment Letters at Mohammad Salleh Main Mosque in Bangar Town. The Appointment Letters were handed over by Yang Arif Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Tasim bin Haji Akim, Permanent Penal Judge of the Syariah Court of Appeals as Member of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.

Efforts to Enhance the Country’s Image

In his introduction, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports also shared among the efforts to enhance the country’s image at the regional and international levels.

The implementation of ASEAN Walk Project at Sungai Damuan Recreation Park will complete the sculptures from 10 ASEAN countries. Brunei Darussalam will be the first ASEAN country to complete the 10 sculptures of ASEAN countries. Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Republic of Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand will work together to nominate the kebaya for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural and increase in the number of memorandums of understanding with neighbouring countries in the fields of culture, heritage, art, history and language. Participation such as the Muscat International Book Fair is an example of how the country is utilising the Memorandum of Understanding platform in the field of culture together with neighbouring countries.

Integrity and Compliance Are Vital

Another matter discussed was project management and contract that was raised by Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Momin. In reply, the Minister of Development stressed that integrity and compliance are vital.

The Minister said risks assessments of challenges that can fail any project or contract is unavoidable. Looking at this aspect, one way to raise awareness in the matter of integrity and compliance is training through dialogue and explanations on the country’s laws and regulations. Among them are Financial Regulation, General Orders for Civil Servants, Anti-Corruption Act, as well as the Penal Code and related regulations.

Green Building Initiative

The promotion of green technology and alternative energy at the National Housing Scheme Model Homes raised by Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Salleh Bostaman bin Haji Zainal Abidin was also clarified by the Minister of Development.

Yang Berhormat said that for the past few years, the Housing Development Department has included the green building initiative in the public housing construction. Two housing projects have obtained the green mark certification which are the Kampung Lugu National Housing Project with one thousand cluster type houses and Kampung Lambak Kanan national housing projects with 300 apartment units based on the criteria of energy and water efficiency, environmental protection, indoor environmental quality and others. Meanwhile two housing projects currently carried out are the Kampung Lugu National Housing Project Phase Two with one thousand units of terrace houses and the Kampung Tanah Jambu National Housing Project Phase Seven with 950 terrace houses, which are also expected to obtain the green mark certification.

Briefing Session

Practising the smart consumer culture through information in the “PenggunaBijak” application was among the matters shared during the briefing session delivered by the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics, DEPS, Ministry of Finance and Economy. The session was held during the Brunei MSME Festival 2023, recently.

The DEPS also shared the government’s more sustainable measures in collaboration with the private sector and regulators to diversify import sources and enhance local production to reduce high dependence on imports in ensuring supply stability. The session ended by urging traders and consumers to join hands with the government towards creating a better market to achieve a healthy and resilient market environment through a sustainable business ecosystem and powerful consumers.

Implementation of Assistance through National Welfare System

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports also shared that almost 3 years since the implementation of Sistem Kebajikan Negara or National Welfare System, SKN. The system has implemented assistance from Brunei Islamic Religious Council, MUIB; Department of Community Development, JAPEM and the latest, Annual Education Welfare Assistance, BKPT.

The integration of assistance into the system has generated a database that is combined with Artificial Intelligence analysis by using the Power Business Intelligence, Power BI programme as added value to the establishment of the system. The AI feature build in the system has optimised the usage of the system and widen the analysis scope in term of geo location and its relation with socio economy of SKN applicants and recipients.
