India and ASEAN resolve to expand cooperation in trade, defence, vaccines

Foreign ministers of India and the ASEAN nations on Thursday agreed to work towards a “meaningful and substantive” comprehensive strategic partnership even as the two sides explored ways to navigate the implications of the developments in Ukraine on trade and regional security.

In his opening address at a special meeting of India-ASEAN foreign ministers in Delhi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar referred to the “geopolitical headwinds” triggered by the Ukraine crisis and its knock-on effects on food, energy security and prices of fertilisers and commodities as well as the impact on logistics and supply chains.

In the meeting, the two sides resolved to expand cooperation in key sectors such as trade, connectivity, defence, vaccine production and clean energy, and agreed to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) to ensure a more user friendly, simple and trade facilitation.

The visiting foreign ministers also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed various aspects of cooperation between the two sides.

India hosted the conclave to mark the 30th anniversary of its relations with the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and it was attended by foreign ministers of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam while Lao PDR, Philippines and Thailand sent representatives of their foreign ministers.

There was no representation from Myanmar as it is learnt that India did not invite the Myanmarese foreign minister in sync with ASEAN’s consensus following the military coup in that country last year that engagement with it should be at the non-political and non-military level.

Road Re-Opening

The Telisai-Lumut Highway will fully re-opened, starting 18th June 2022. In this regard, the highway users are reminded to adhere to the road signs and set speed limits.

The Public Works Department, Ministry of Development in its press release informed that the highway will be fully re-opened following the completion of repair works on the slip road of the Telisai-Lumut Highway. The highway will be open from 10 in the morning.

In line with the position of women as the core of the family and supporter of national development, women’s achievement should be celebrated in various aspects. Brunei Darussalam fully recognises the importance of women’s role in the country’s socio-economic development, while also acknowledging the rights and empowerment of women.

Arrival of Second Group of Intending Haj Pilgrims

The second group of the Brunei Darussalam’s intending haj pilgrims on-board Royal Brunei Aircraft BI 4203 safely arrived in Madinah Al-Munawarah, 16th June night.

The second and final flight carrying 206 of Brunei Darussalam’s intending haj pilgrims arrived at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Aziz International Airport in Madinah at 2:10 in the afternoon local time. Their arrival was greeted by His Excellency Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Ismail, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to Saudi Arabia in Riyadh. Throughout their stay in Madinah, the delegation are staying at Dallah Taibah Hotel. After two years of COVID-19 restrictions, 453 of Brunei Darussalam’s intending Hajj Pilgrims are in the holy land to fulfil the Fifth Pillar of Islam.

Energy Forum

The SME 360 Series – Energy Forum shared a discussion for small and medium enterprises on opportunities, best practices and the future of the energy sector. The forum was held as part of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD’s support for Energy Week.

Upstream Marginal Field, Asset Integrity and Health, and Safety, Security and Environment, HSSE, were among subjects discussed during the Energy Seminar in conjunction with MYCE 2022.

The session provided compelling discussions on innovative green technologies. Workshop on National Policies on Lifelong Learning

Various developments and efforts are implemented in ensuring lifelong learning in Brunei Darussalam particularly through the Whole-of-Nation Approach in promoting accessibilities and opportunities of lifelong learning where all stakeholders are being actively engaged. This includes inter-ministerial collaborations as well as partnership between the public and private sectors. Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Paduka Doctor Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh, Minister of Education stated this while delivering a statement on National policies on Lifelong Learning: Achievement, Challenges and Recommendation on Lifelong Learning toward Sustainability in Southeast Asia.

The Minister of Education also highlighted that as a result of a collaborative effort between the ministries, public and private sector, ‘SkillsPlus’, an initiative under the Learn and Grow Programme supported by the Lifelong Learning Centre, Ministry of Education was launched. Good governance and regional collaborations can ensure that no lifelong learner is left behind and the region can be developed in a sustainable manner. The workshop as part of the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education organised by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning was held virtually.
