Year of Tourism 2020 Closing Ceremony

 

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic that affected international travel, the cooperation between Brunei and China continued as both countries embarked into the new normal, with activities organised via online platforms. A virtual training programme was held in November last year for Brunei’s local tour guides as well as tourism professionals to further improve their Chinese language and communication skills.

 

According to the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, in further enhancing the existing bilateral cooperation through connectivity, Brunei Darussalam is also grateful for the support extended by the Government of The People’s Republic of China for the national carrier which has led to increased economic activities and opportunities in the areas of tourism, agriculture, construction, maritime and others. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong shared the matter during the virtual Closing Ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam and The People’s Republic of China Year of Tourism 2020 yesterday morning.

 

Earlier, His Excellency Hu Heping, Minister of Culture and Tourism, the People’s Republic of China in his remarks said over the past 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral ties have developed rapidly and soundly, with steady progress made in practical cooperation in culture, tourism and other fields, as well as close communication and cooperation in regional and international affairs. The Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of China Year of Tourism 2020 provided a unique platform to increase tourism cooperation through people-to-people exchanges, enhance bilateral cooperations, capacity building and furthering collaboration and partnership between both countries.

Internet Disruption

 

A major fault to the South-East Asia Japan Cable, SJC occurred on the 24th of December 2021 has resulted in intermittent interruption of services for internet, data, IDD international and roaming in the country. The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam, AITI and Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd, UNN in its press release informed that most of the internet use could have experienced slower response of applications used during the peak demand hours.

 

In response, UNN has activated additional capacity via the Transborneo Cable System to mitigate congestion concerns and ensure the nation has sufficient capacity for internet. However, on the 25th of December 2021, another fault occurred on the Transborneo Cable System which further reduced internet capacity. While restoration works are in progress, fixed and mobile services subscribers shall continue to experience some form of degradation while using the internet especially during peak hours.

Contact Tracing Team, Ministry Of Health

 

Following the spread of information on social media pertaining to a query on the validation of the short message service, SMS received from the Contact Tracing Division, seeking personal information such as Name, IC Number, Telephone Number, BruHIMS Number and Full Address; the Ministry of Health would like to confirm that the SMS is valid. As informed, the Ministry of Health through the Contact Tracing Team is responsible for contact tracing tasks on any individuals or close contact to individuals infected with COVID-19 in order to ensure that the public’s health is protected from the risk of the disease transmission.

 

At the same time, the Ministry of Health also seeks the public’s full cooperation towards the Contact Tracing Team, Ministry of Health to contact the provided telephone line immediately if received such SMS. As an additional safety feature in ensuring the validity of the SMS, the Ministry of Health will also provide Service Number for the Contact Tracing Team that contacts any of the close contacts via the SMS, or if necessary, those who have been contacted can request for the Contact Tracing team to show their service identity card through WhatsApp, if there are any inquiries or require caller confirmation,  the public can contact the Disease Control Division, Ministry of Health at 2380318 from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. Possessing Contraband Items

A Bangladeshi citizen was sentenced to a $56,000 compound fine or 15 months imprisonment in default for being in possession of contraband.

 

Mamun Hossain, a 40 year old man was found guilty of possessing 69 cartons and 10 packets of cigarettes of various brands. The arrest was made on the 8th of December at a staff house in Burong Pingai, Berakas by officers from the Law Enforcement Division, Royal Excise Customs Department. The accused failed to settle the fine and faces imprisonment starting yesterday.

Virtual Quiz

 

The Second Series of the Virtual Quiz Competition organised by the Brunei History Centre through the Library and Learning Division continued yesterday morning. It was held in conjunction with the Brunei December Festival 2021 and Day of Action.

 

16 participants aged 9 to 15 joined the competition. It was an annual activity held during the school holidays as well as one of the Brunei History Centre’s way to bring the community closer to history specifically the young generation in becoming more involved in history and have a better understanding of it.

Virtual Comic Discussion

 

The virtual Comic Discussion with cartoonists was among the events for the Brunei December Festival 2021. It aimed to gather youth comic enthusiasts to brainstorm and exchange views to be more creative in producing comics in Brunei Darussalam.

 

According to Dayang Hurul-Ain Nukhbah Binti Rabaha, Language Officer, Language and Literature Bureau, the Comic Discussion is also related to the publication of the Bureau’s ‘Komik Lakak-lakak’ in which a platform is provided to send the cartoonists’ works and published into a comic.

 

Several local cartoonists shared their journey and involvement in the world of comic’s eventhough a number of them have permanent jobs.

A person who is renowned in the local comic scene is Awang Mohammad Rezuan bin Jamaeh. He ventured into the field of drawing since his schooling years. ‘Zoey Topeng Sakti’ is one of his nine personal comics that has received encouraging response.

 

The production of comics at this time continues to develop with the involvement of experienced and confident youths. Sharing sessions such as the Comic Discussion is hoped to produce cartoonists who are enthusiastic in a broad publication of comics with a precise target audience.

Closing Of BIBD Youth Empowerment Summit

The government’s role and the Whole of Nation approach are to provide platforms and support to channel the contribution of youths for society. However it is up to them to fully capitalise the platforms in order to achieve what they aspire, to be involved and to continuously improve themselves. The matter was stated by Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture Youth and Sports at the closing of The BIBD Youth Empowerment Summit BIBD YES! 2021 held virtually.

 

Yang Berhormat also reminded that as Bruneians, the country’s future is the duty and responsibility of all in fulfilling the aspirations of His Majesty’s government to accomplish the country’s goal through Wawasan Brunei 2035. During the closing session a dialogue titled ‘Youth for Climate Action’ was held between a member of the Legislative Council, who is also the Co-Founder of Green Brunei and Dina Yahya, Head of Brunei Climate Change Secretariat.

Price Control Act Chapter 142

The Price Control Act (Amendment) Order, 2021 which is effective from the 23rd of November 2021 aimed to further strengthen the legal framework of the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 in the country. The enforcement of the Price Control Act has been approved by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

 

DEPS in its media release stated the objective of the Control Act amendment is to update and strengthen the relevant provisions in an effort to improved and further streamline the enforcement measures implemented by DEPS, to remain relevant to the current economic context as well as Brunei Darussalam’s economic goals in the long run. The amendment is also accompanied by amendments to additional laws, namely ‘Price Control – Maximum Prices and Charges Amendment Order, 2021’ AND ‘Price Control Minimum Price and Charges, Repeal Order, Two Thousand and Twenty One ‘which will take effect on the date it is gazetted.

 

In an effort to safeguard the interests as the public’s well-being, key amendments include providing provisions to enable DEPS to carry out price monitoring and enforcement of specific goods in certain circumstances such as during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis or desperate circumstances for appropriate periods. In this regard, DEPS reminded traders that failure to cooperate such as not providing the required information or records transparently or preventing officers from entering or inspecting business premises, is an offense and punishable if convicted under the Act. The amendments also include the continuous updating of the list of maximum price -controlled goods under the Price Control Act, including goods subsidized by the Government.

11 New Cases, 5 Cases Recovered

11 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed yesterday, bringing the total COVID-19 cases to 15,458. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health stated the matter at a media conference on the latest COVID-19 situation held at Dewan Al ‘Afiah, Ministry of Health.

 

Of the total, 10 are local cases and 1 is an import case. The number of new cases is the result of 1,121 laboratory tests conducted in the past 24 hours. Therefore, the rate of positive cases yesterday is 1 percent. Among the cases being treated at the National Isolation Centre, one case is still in Category 5 requiring assistance of artificial ventilation and an additional heart/lung machine, ECMO at the Intensive Care Unit. 5 cases have recovered yesterday, bringing the total number of recovered cases in Brunei Darussalam to 15,260 cases and the total active cases are 98 cases. Meanwhile, the bed occupancy rate in isolation centres nationwide is 2.4 percent.
